(CNN) -- An 8-year-old boy and a crossing guard were hit by stray bullets Wednesday morning, apparently caught in crossfire as people in two vehicles shot at each other outside a Philadelphia elementary school, police said.
The student is undergoing surgery and is in critical condition, police said.
The boy was on his way into Thomas M. Peirce Elementary School when he was shot in the face, said Fernando Gallard, an official with the School District of Philadelphia.
The guard, a woman, was hit on the foot, authorities said. Her condition is unknown.
Both the student and crossing guard were taken to Temple University Hospital, police said.
The school is on lockdown, the school district said, and parents are allowed to pick up their children. A crisis intervention team is also on campus, Gallard said.
Police said they are looking for a gray Lincoln Continental that may be connected with the shooting.
The school is in north Philadelphia.
