EDISON, New Jersey (CNN) -- Firefighters battled a massive fire Friday that broke out at an apartment complex in Edison, New Jersey, claiming at least one life.
"The fire is not yet under control and is contained at this point to only one building," said a spokesman for the Edison Fire Department.
The spokesman said one fatality had been confirmed but the cause of death was not immediately known. In addition, five people -- two firefighters, a police officer and two residents -- are receiving treatment for smoke inhalation, he said.
The building has 36 units, all have which have been evacuated, he said.
The fire broke out shortly after 9:30 a.m. ET.
Units from two neighboring communities are on the scene, along with Red Cross and Salvation Army representatives, officials said.
