(CNN) -- A school bus overturned on a suburban St. Louis, Missouri, highway Monday morning, injuring one student and pinning the driver's arm underneath the vehicle, police said.
The bus was headed to a St. Louis County school with 26 students on board when the accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. (9:30 a.m. ET), said Cpl. Jeff Myer, a police spokesman in the St. Louis suburb of Town and Country.
All students were taken to hospitals for examination, but only one appeared to have suffered what Myer termed "moderate" injuries.
The driver suffered injuries to her left arm, which was pinned beneath the bus when it came to rest, he said.
The accident occurred on a section of Interstate 64 in western St. Louis County, about 15 miles from downtown St. Louis.
The cause of the wreck remained under investigation, but Myer said the bus appeared to have flipped when traffic on the freeway came to a sudden halt, forcing the driver to swerve to avoid cars ahead of it.
The bus may have hit the highway's median before veering back toward traffic and overturning, Myer said.
