MADRID, Spain -- Two Albacete fans have been fined 6,000 euros each and banned from football stadiums for five months after racially abusing Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o.
The pair, who made monkey noises whenever the Cameroon international touched the ball, were identified thanks to information given to the police by other Albacete fans
Albacete officials praised the action of the supporters who helped identify the culprits following the Primera Liga match on December 11.
However, they said they were angry that the club itself had also been fined by the Spanish Football Federation.
"We are not responsible for the racist behaviour of a small minority," said Albacete director general Ricardo Cabanas.
"The Anti-violence Commission decision makes it clear that the club did all it could to help in this matter and the Federation should have kept its nose out.
Earlier this week the federation opened an investigation into the recent behaviour of Spain coach Luis Aragones following a recommendation by the Commission.
Aragones landed himself in trouble in October when he made apparently racist remarks about France striker Thierry Henry.
He caused further controversy when he mounted an energetic defence of his comments on the eve of last month's friendly against England in which he also criticised that country's colonial past.
The match at the Bernabeu was marred by racist abuse and chanting directed at visiting black players by large sections of the crowd.
