Zanetti is out of Italy's friendly
ROME, Italy -- Inter Milan midfielder Cristiano Zanetti and Parma defender Marcello Castellini have pulled out of Italy's trip to face Euro 2004 hosts Portugal on Wednesday.
Zanetti has strained his left thigh while Castellini misses the friendly international in Braga because of a sore hamstring.
They were sent home from the team's training camp in Milan on Monday after Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni had consulted his medical staff.
He has called up AC Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini and Bologna defender Cesare Natale as replacements.
Trapattoni is without three of his first choice back four as AC Milan's Alessandro Nesta, Inter Milan's Fabio Cannavaro and Juventus left-back Gianluca Zambrotta are all injuried.
Lazio defender Giuseppe Favalli, out of the squad since 1998, AC Milan's Giuseppe Pancaro and Parma's Marcello Castellini are all named in the 22-man squad.
Bologna's 32-year-old winger Carlo Nervo is recalled to the midfield along with AC Milan's Gennaro Gattuso.
Injuries also mean that Trapattoni is without strikers Filippo Inzaghi of Milan, Roma's Antonio Cassano and Juve's Alessandro Del Piero.
Juventus strikers Marco Di Vaio and Fabrizio Miccoli are given a chance along with Lazio's Bernardo Corradi, who is expected to share target man duties with Inter's Christian Vieri.
