Santos sweep into the second round
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Brazil's Santos reached the Libertadores Cup second round with a 2-1 away win over Paraguay's 10-man Guarani in a group seven match in Asuncion.
Guarani had defender Gilberto Velazquez sent off in the 39th minute as last year's beaten finalists Santos went seven points clear of their rivals.
Independiente of Argentina and Uruguay's Nacional, who between them have won the trophy 10 times, continued their rivalry with a 1-1 draw in Buenos Aires.
Nacional, who went ahead in the 52nd minute through striker Luis Romero, had midfielder Andres Aparicio sent off nine minutes from time.
And they conceded an equaliser to Independiente's Uruguayan substitute Sebastian Garcia two minutes later.
The Uruguayans lead group seven with nine points and Independiente are second on eight after five matches.
Colo Colo ended a 12-match losing streak for Chilean clubs with a 2-0 home win over Bolivar of Bolivia.
The three Chilean clubs last picked up a point in this year's competition when Universidad de Concepcion drew 2-2 away to Santos Laguna of Mexico in group three early last month.
Cobreloa, finalists in 1981 and 1982, have lost all five of their matches so far in group four.
Forwards Juan Pablo Ubeda and Manuel Neira scored the Colo Colo goals either side of halftime to hand 1991 Libertadores champions their first three points after four matches in group eight.
Bolivar, who had beaten Colo Colo 2-0 at altitude in La Paz last week, needed a fine performance from goalkeeper Jose Fernandez to keep the score down.
Holders Boca Juniors lead the group on nine points followed by Bolivar and Deportivo Cali of Colombia, who both have six.
