BERLIN, Germany -- Runaway leaders Werder Bremen moved a step closer to the Bundesliga title with a 2-0 win at VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday.
Goals in the last 15 minutes from Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic and French playmaker Johan Micoud see them 11 points clear of Bayern Munich with nine matches left.
"If we keep on playing like that and if we remain focused, we should be all right," Werder coach Thomas Schaaf said as his team closed on their first title since 1993.
Champions Bayern undermined their slim hopes of retaining the title by being held to a 1-1 draw at strugglers Hertha Berlin on Saturday.
With the scores level Brazilian Ailton, scorer of 22 goals this season, missed a penalty kick on 67 minutes with his fierce shot rebounding off the post.
However, that miss did not prove costly as Croatian international Klasnic scored on 75 minutes after good work from Fabian Ernst.
Five minutes from time Frenchman Micoud then raced through to make it 2-0 as Wolfsburg pushed forward for an equalizer.
In Sunday's other match 1860 Munich battled to a 1-1 home draw against SC Freiburg.
Paul Agostino struck on 58 minutes to cancel out Freiburg's opener from Soumaila Coulibaly in the 10th minute.
Munich have been rocked by a scandal surrounding president Karl-Heinz Wildmoser, who has since resigned, over allegations of bribery in connection with the erection of the Allianz Arena.
