NYON, Switzerland -- European ruling body UEFA has appealed against its own disciplinary committee's decision to ban Manchester United's Roy Keane for one match.
UEFA has the power to contest verdicts under article 50 of the disciplinary regulations and wants Keane's suspension extended to at least three games.
United captain Keane was charged with improper conduct following a stamp on Porto keeper Vitor Baia during the 2-1 Champions League defeat in Portugal two weeks ago.
But UEFA wants the incident to be considered as an act of assault which would mean a ban of at least three matches.
UEFA said the appeal hearing is likely to take place on March 19.
Manchester United, without the suspended Keane, host Porto in the second leg of their first knockout round tie later on Tuesday.
