ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Spanish side Valencia claimed a 2-0 win at Besiktas to ease into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup with a 5-2 aggregate win.
Any concerns the Spanish side may have had about defending their first leg 3-2 lead were settled by Miguel Angel Angulo's opener on 12 minutes.
After soaking up Turkish pressure, Valencia killed the tie on 57 minutes with a header from Juan Sanchez.
Valencia coach Rafael Benitez said he was surprised Besiktas had not pushed his side harder.
"It was a complicated game for us," said Benitez.
"They attacked us to try and get back into the game, but Besiktas did not play as well as I had expected, so it became easier for us. They left space at the back for us to exploit."
Burgeoning reputation
Besiktas coach Mircea Lucescu said Valencia's defensive tactics were proof of his side's burgeoning reputation.
"They played with a lot of defensive players," said the Romanian.
"Our side is becoming well known by the other teams in Europe."
Besiktas had dominated the first half but were left down by poor finishing from Sergen Yalcin, Kaan Dobra and Daniel Pancu.
Angulo took advantage of a break to run at Besiktas' defense, cutting inside from the right and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Oscar Cordoba.
Besiktas' best chance of the night came shortly after the break when substitute Ahmed Hassan shot wide from a narrow angle.
But they lose their discipline after Valencia's second goal, an expertly executed header by Sanchez from Xisco Munoz's cross, and Antonio Zago was sent off in injury time for a foul on Carlos Marchena.
