MILAN, Italy (Reuters) -- Inter Milan had striker Christian Vieri sent off but scraped into the fourth round of the UEFA Cup with a dull goalless draw at home to Sochaux.
That was enough to send the Italian giants through on away goals after the first leg in France ended 2-2.
Inter, who have lost their last three Serie A games, took few risks in the match and the French side will be frustrated they did not do more to find a way through a far from confident Italian defense.
Inter had slightly the better of a lackluster opening 45 minutes although Vieri and Cristiano Zanetti's shots, which caused little trouble for Sochaux keeper Gerard Ghanhouan, were all they could muster before the break.
The French club were gaining in confidence and should have broken the deadlock in the 67th minute but Brazilian-born Tunisian international Francileudo dos Santos shot weakly from point blank range at Francesco Toldo.
Nine minutes later dos Santos forced Toldo into a great save with a looping deflected shot that the Inter keeper did well to tip wide but Sochaux were unable to really threaten after that.
Four minutes from the end Vieri was sent off for what appeared to be an elbow in the face of Maxence Flachez right under the eye of English referee Stephen Bennett.
Italy international Vieri will now miss at least the first-leg of the fourth round tie.
