NYON, Switzerland -- Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos has been banned for two European matches after clashing with Bayern Munich's Martin Demichelis during last week's Champions League encounter.
Carlos hit Demichelis in the face following a rough tackle which earned the Bayern man a yellow card in Wednesday's 1-1 first leg draw in Munich.
The Brazilian was unpunished and went on to score Real's equalizer minutes later.
Carlos, who would miss the second leg of the second round tie at the Bernabeu next week, has until Thursday to appeal.
"The UEFA disciplinary body ruled that Roberto Carlos had committed an act of assault, which usually carries a three-match ban," read a statement on UEFA's Web site.
"However, it took into account the foul committed on the player, and subsequently imposed a two-match suspension."
Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno said the club had been taken by surprise by UEFA's decision.
"We thought the incident was a reaction by Roberto Carlos to a heavy challenge by Demichelis and we did not think he would be banned," Butragueno told the Real Madrid Web site.
"In any case, we think a two-match ban is excessive. The club will be studying the decision over the next few days to see if we can appeal."
