LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -- Two goals in three minutes from Steven Gerrard and Harry Kewell lifted Liverpool to a 2-0 win over Bulgaria's Levski Sofia in a third-round, first-leg UEFA Cup match.
Gerrard scored on 67 minutes with a blistering left-footed shot from 20 meters.
Three minutes later, Kewell scored on an even more spectacular shot.
Shooting from a sharp angle off the right wing, he curled home a 20-meter (yard) left-footed drive that beat goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov diving high to his right.
The victory was a relief for manager Gerard Houllier, who has been under intense pressure since the club lost 1-0 on Sunday to Portsmouth in the fifth round of England's F.A. Cup.
Liverpool had a difficult time breaking down the Bulgarian side in the first half.
Liverpool's Milan Baros was brought down twice in the area but didn't get the penalty call either time.
