Hibs down Rangers in cup shoot-out
GLASGOW, Scotland -- Rangers' hopes of holding on to their League Cup crown crumbled when Hibernian came back from a goal down to reach the final in a penalty shoot-out.
Rangers had opened the scoring through Dutch forward Michael Mols in the 40th minute but Hibs levelled through Stephen Dobbie 11 minutes from end of the 90 minutes.
Dobbie's strike in the 79th minute pushed the semifinal into extra time, Hibs winning 4-3 on penalties after the sides failed to break the deadlock.
Frank de Boer, who joined his twin brother Ronald at Ibrox last week from Galatasaray in a bid to reignite his Euro 2004 selection chances for Holland, ultimately proved the culprit for the men from Ibrox.
After Hibs had taken the lead from the spot through Gary Caldwell, Rangers' forward Shota Arveladze missed their first attempt at goal.
Frank De Boer then failed to keep Rangers in the competition, failing to beat Hibernian keeper Daniel Andersson.
In the final Hibernian will now meet cash-strapped Livingston, who scraped through their semifinal 1-0 over Dundee thanks to a last-minute penalty on Wednesday.
