Wolves get Cort but lose in FA Cup
LONDON, England -- English Premier League strugglers Wolves completed the signing of Newcastle striker Carl Cort then crashed out of the FA Cup to First Division West Ham on Sunday.
Wolves had beaten Manchester United and drawn with Liverpool in the build up to the fourth round tie, but were soundly beaten 3-1 at Molineux.
Brian Deane, Marlon Harewood and David Connolly scored West Ham's goals in the first half with Viorel Ganea on target for the home side.
Injury-plagued Cort, who signed for two million pounds ($3 million), was paraded to Wolves fans before the start of the match then saw much-travelled forward Deane on target with a sweetly struck shot in the fourth minute.
Harewood doubled the lead from close range in the 21st minute, but Romanian Ioanee Ganea grabbed one back for Wolves two minutes later when he ran unmarked into the box to fire home.
Less than 10 minutes later, Connolly made it 3-1 for the visitors, beating the offside trap and finishing by curling the ball past Wolves keeper Michael Oakes.
The all-Premiership tie at the City of Manchester Stadium saw Manchester City draw 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur.
City took the lead after four minutes as Nicolas Anelka scored from close range following up a header from Robbie Fowler which struck the post.
But a strong second-half showing from the visitors saw Tottenham level on 59 minutes through a header from Gary Doherty, though stand-in City goalkeeper Kevin Ellegaard was at fault, allowing a corner to sail over his head to the far post.
"I am not going to condemn him (Elegaard) for that," City coach Kevin Keegan said. "He is a young goalkeeper, that's only his fifth game and two of those have been as sub.
"He has made two good saves, one from a free-kick and one low down.
Francis Jeffers was the hero for Everton at Goodison as his late equaliser secured a replay for them with a 1-1 draw against Fulham, after Sean Davis had put the visitors ahead four minutes after half-time.
In an all-First Divison match, Jack Lester, from the penalty spot, Chris Morgan and Wayne Allison scored the goals as Sheffield United reached the fifth round with a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest.
