Bayonne shock Bordeaux on a swamp
BAYONNE, France -- Bordeaux's French Cup hopes were washed away on a near swamp at Bayonne, as the Fourth Division amateurs snatched a stunning 1-0 victory in extra time.
Any advantage that the First Division side had in terms of skill was negated on a pitch covered in puddles and there was also a floodlight failure midway through the second half.
In the extra period Frederic Bernaleau curled home a free kick around to put his side into the last 16.
Delighted Bayonne coach Christian Sarramagna said: "Nights like tonight don't come around very often. It's fabulous, inexplicable."
Bordeaux coach Michel Pavon congratulated the minnows but said the match should never have been played.
"I didn't see a football match tonight, I saw players pushing a ball about in the mud. It's abnormal to make us play in conditions like that."
