Puyol adds to Barcelona's problems
MADRID, Spain (Reuters) -- Barcelona defender Carles Puyol will be out for up to six weeks after suffering a fractured cheekbone in the club's King's Cup win over Levante on Wednesday.
The Spanish international was forced off in the 81st minute of his side's 3-1 win after a clash with Levante striker Edwin Congo.
X-rays taken early on Thursday confirmed the fracture and Barcelona said their player would need between four and six weeks to recover.
Unlucky Puyol missed five games last season with a similar injury and had to wear a protective mask when he returned to the team.
The loss of the inspirational Puyol, who can play anywhere in the defense, will be a huge blow to Barcelona, who are struggling to stay in race for a European qualification place for next season.
Halfway through the league campaign, they are in seventh place, 16 points behind leaders Valencia and four behind Atletico Madrid in the fourth and final Champions League slot.
Victory over Levante gave them a 3-2 aggregate win and a place in Friday's draw for the quarterfinals.
