PARIS, France -- Former greats St Etienne caused the upset of the French League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday when the Second Division club beat Ligue 1 favourites Nice 2-0.

And Nantes beat Le Mans 5-4 on penalties after their match had finished at 1-1 while Sochaux sealed their place on Tuesday with a 4-0 drubbing of Lens.
St Etienne, who were among the European footballing elite from the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, went ahead with a blistering shot from midfielder Fabrice Jau in the 23rd minute.
Having already knocked out Ligue 1 side Lille in the previous round, they made sure of another scalp in the 53rd minute when striker Lilian Compan converted from the penalty spot at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard.
In their prime, St Etienne won eight league titles, five French Cups and reached the 1976 European Cup final, while their best-known player, Michel Platini, guided them to another league title in 1981.
