Ronaldo and Figo give Real victory
MADRID, Spain -- Ronaldo and Luis Figo scored second-half goals as Real Madrid overcame a valiant Eibar 2-0 to reach the Spanish Cup quarterfinals 3-1 on aggregate.
Brazilian Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 56th minute, firing into an empty net after being set up by Roberto Carlos' pass across goal.
Second Division Eibar's hopes of glory disappeared in the 69th minute when Figo curled home a free kick from the edge of the penalty area.
But Carlos Quieroz's team, lacking the injured David Beckham and Raul Gonzalez but fielding all their other stars, were forced into some desperate defense by Eibar -- who were never overawed by their visit to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
The Basque side, which gained a creditable 1-1 home draw in the first leg, created four goal chances before halftime with striker Gaizka Saizar missing two of them, while Real only came close through an early Ivan Helguera header.
They should have opened the scoring in the 56th minute when Roberto Cuevas, who headed in Eibar's first-leg goal, missed from two meters out with the goal gaping -- with Ronaldo making them pay for their wastefulness with the opening goal a minute later.
