LONDON, England (CNN) -- Spanish champions Real Madrid held onto the number one spot on the first CNN/ World Soccer Top 10 of 2004.

Madrid launched the year with a 1-0 win at Murcia to maintain their two-point lead at the top of the Liga and then drew 1-1 with second division side Eibar in the first leg of their King's Cup third round tie.

European champions AC Milan climbed one place to No. 2 following their 2-1 win over Serie A leaders Roma on Tuesday.

Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko scored both the goals as Milan cut Roma's lead to three points, and the Rossoneri still have a game in hand.

English champions Manchester United climbed one place to third after securing a 2-1 win over Bolton in the Premier League on Wednesday, maintaining their three-point lead over Arsenal, who hold sixth place on this week's poll.

Paul Scholes, who scored once against Bolton, scored both goals at the weekend as United beat Aston Villa 2-1 in the FA Cup third round.

Italian champions Juventus jumped two places to No. 4 following their 1-0 win over Perugia which kept the Turin giants level on points in Serie A with Milan.

Boca Juniors, the Argentine and Intercontinental champions, slip three places to fifth.

The weekly CNN/World Soccer Top 10 is compiled by staff from CNN's World Sport show along with the team at World Soccer magazine.
