Stroescu returns to Romanian squad

Olympics 2004
Athens (Greece)

BUCHAREST, Romania -- Gymnast Silvia Stroescu has changed her mind about retirement and has returned to the Romanian Olympic squad after being summoned to replace Andreea Munteanu.

The 19-year-old, a member of the team that won gold at the 2001 world championships, had said she was angry at being dropped from the squad and planned to give up the sport.

But coach Octavian Bellu said Munteanu had suffered a leg injury and so officials had asked Stroescu to step in.

"We cannot risk waiting for her (Munteanu) to completely recover and get back her shape," said Bellu.

"Stroescu said yes to our call," Bellu said. "She has joined the team and will come with us to Greece."

The women's competition in Athens begins on August 15.
