Wil celebrate first Swiss Cup win
BASEL, Switzerland (Reuters) -- FC Wil lifted the Swiss Cup for the first time in their 104-year history when they beat 10-man Grasshoppers 3-2 on Monday and earn a UEFA Cup place.
Striker Fabinho struck his second penalty of the game 11 minutes from time to hand victory to underdogs Wil, who are facing the prospect of relegation.
Rogerio gave Wil the lead after five minutes only for Richard Nunez (8) and Ricardo Cabanas (19) to reply. Fabinho levelled from the spot on the half-hour.
Grasshoppers, who hold the record of 18 Swiss Cup triumphs, were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of halftime when defensive midfielder Mihai Tararache received a second booking.
Wil, estimated to be five million Swiss francs ($3.94m) in debt, enjoyed their previous best cup run in 1998 when they were beaten semifinalists.
They have had five managers this season, and current coach Joachim Mueller has had two spells after initially quitting following disagreements with president Igor Belanov, the former European Footballer of the Year.
