Muscat's FA Cup dream is shattered
LONDON, England -- Kevin Muscat's dream of FA Cup glory has been shattered as a result of the knee injury he suffered helping Millwall reach the final.
The Millwall and Australia defender learned on Thursday that he will need surgery to assess the extent of ligament damage he suffered following a tackle by George McCartney in the semi-final win over Sunderland.
Millwall's assistant manager, Ray Wilkins, confirmed that Muscat had been ruled out for the rest of the season.
"Kevin saw the surgeon last night and at the moment from what the surgeon can read off the scans, it is not as bad as first thought," he told the club's website.
"But in saying that, he's not going to know the full extent of the damage until he goes in. We're all keeping our fingers crossed for him and please God, that he can come out of it in a couple of months and not the longer period that was once anticipated.
"But his season is finished, which is a great shame because he has played some exceptional stuff this year and is going to miss out on what should be a wonderful climax to it."
Muscat had been hoping to add an FA Cup winners medal to the Scottish Cup medal he won with Rangers last season, when he came on as a substitute in the 1-0 final win over Dundee in May.
