Capriati joins Pacific withdrawals
LONDON, England -- World number six Jennifer Capriati has joined a growing list of players to withdraw from this week's $2.1 million Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells.
Capriati has aggravated a back injury she picked up last November, which forced her out of action for the first seven weeks of the year.
The American played in last week's Qatar Open, losing to eventual winner Anastasia Myskina of Russia in the semi-finals.
"We are certainly disappointed that Jennifer will not be with us this year," tournament chairman Charlie Pasarel said on the WTA website.
"We know she has many fans who were eager to see her play, and we wish her a speedy recovery and return to the court."
France's world number three Amelie Mauresmo withdrew at the weekend, also with a back injury, joining Russia's Elena Bovina, South Africa's Amanda Coetzer, America's Ashley Harkleroad and Australia's Nicole Pratt on the sidelines.
World number two Kim Clijsters of Belgium won last year's event, beating Lindsay Davenport of the U.S. in the final.
Play in the tournament's main draw begins on Wednesday.
