Weir, Maruyama share Nissan lead
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- Defending champion Mike Weir and first-round co-leader Shigeki Maruyama moved into a tie for top spot on 12-under-par 130 through two rounds of the Nissan Open.
Weir and Maruyama hold a one-shot advantage over Scott McCarron and Briny Baird on a second consecutive day of low scoring.
Buick Invitational winner John Daly shot a seven-under-par 64 to move into contention for back-to-back victories at 10-under 132.
Tim Herron also shot a 64 and is one stroke back in joint sixth along with Russ Cochran, Jeff Maggert and 2000 Nissan champion Kirk Triplett.
World number one Tiger Woods fashioned a five-under-par 66 to vault up the leaderboard and into a tie for 38th, eight shots behind the leaders.
Fiji's Vijay Singh followed his first missed cut of the season at the Buick with a one-under-par performance over two rounds to just qualify for the weekend.
The world number two joined 77 other players who fired one-under-par 141 or better over the opening 36 holes.
When Weir won this event last year it was already his second title of 2003, having won the Bob Hope three weeks earlier.
In April, Weir captured his first major championship, winning the U.S. Masters in a playoff and despite playing well, the Canadian has not won in the 10 months since that triumph.
"Up until last year, I hadn't played the golf course very well," Weir said of the Riviera layout.
"I seemed to figure it out. Obviously, as defending champion I wanted to come in here and get off to a nice start and play well. I didn't expect to be 12-under after two days.
"But the golf course, being very soft and without any wind, is being attacked by all the players. The numbers are out there right now."
