German Siem claims maiden Tour win
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Pony-tailed German Marcel Siem won his first European Tour event on Sunday by clinching the Dunhill Championship on the third hole of a three-way playoff.
The 23-year-old from Dusseldorf holed a 10-foot birdie putt at Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg to end the challenges of French pair Gregory Havret and Raphael Jacquelin.
Siem, Havret and Jacquelin completed their four rounds on 266 - 22 under par.
The French golfers had final-round 67s while Siem, who has been in contention from the rain-drenched opening round, fired a six-under 66 in good conditions.
The trio finished one stroke ahead of overnight leader Soren Hansen of Denmark with Maarten Lafeber of the Netherlands a further three stokes behind in an event won by Martin Foster of England last year.
Trevor Immelman, a comfortable winner of the South African Open last weekend, James Kingston and Craig Lile were the best placed South Africans, finishing on 272 with three other players.
Siem, who started playing golf at the age of six, qualified to the European Tour in 2001 but lost it after his 131st place finish in the Order of Merit.
He finally regained his European Tour card after a second successful spell at qualifying school in 2002.
