Paerson tops the World Cup overall standings with 898 points

MARIBOR, Slovenia -- Swede Anja Paerson claimed her fifth victory of the season when she won the women's World Cup giant slalom event in Maribor.
The 32-year-old won in two minutes 18.27 seconds with Austria's Michaela Dorfmeister second in 2:19.25.
Spaniard Maria Jose Rienda Contreras, 18, achieved her second World Cup podium spot by finishing third in 2:19.50.
Germany's Maria Riesch recorded her best giant slalom finish to take fourth.
Paerson now leads the overall World Cup standings with 898 points followed by Austria's Renate Goetschl, who finished 11th, on 893 points. Germany's Hilde Gerg lies third with 768 points.
The Swede also leads the giant slalom standings with 330 points, followed by Austria's Nicole Hosp, who crashed out after finishing third fastest on the first run, on 260 and Contreras on 196 points.
The next women's World Cup event is Sunday's slalom in Maribor.
