Saint-Andre admits Wales interest
BOURGOIN, France (Reuters) -- Former France captain Philippe Saint-Andre has been in touch with the Welsh Rugby Union through an agent about succeeding Steve Hansen as coach.
"I can confirm that we were contacted by an agent who told us that the WRU could be interested in myself and Laurent Seigne," Saint-Andre, rugby director at Bourgoin, said on Friday.
"That was two weeks ago and that's all for the time being and we are still coaching Bourgoin," he added.
The ex-France winger confirmed the approach after British media reported that he was one of about 15 applicants.
According to the reports, the list includes another former France international, Laurent Seigne, Bourgoin's coach and twice a European Cup winner with Brive in the late 1990s.
A WRU spokesman could not confirm the British media reports or the number of applicants but said a decision on Hansen's successor was due next month.
Saint-Andre, 36, played 69 times for France between 1990 and 1997, 34 times as captain.
New Zealander Hansen is to return home in April after this year's Six Nations championship.
He guided Wales to the World Cup quarterfinals where they lost 28-17 to eventual champions England.
