South Africa on top in fourth test

Story Tools

CENTURION, South Africa -- South Africa piled on 604 for six before declaring their first innings on the second day of the fourth and final test against the West Indies.

Jacques Kallis became the first man to score centuries in four consecutive test matches with an unbeaten 130 while opener Herschelle Gibbs was finally out for 192 -- the highest-ever score by a South African against the Caribbean islanders.

West Indies, already beaten 2-0 in the series, were 7-0 when bad light brought play to an early close.

"Coming in with more than 300 runs on the board there is a lot less pressure on you, but you still need to score the runs," said Kallis.

"The bounce of the ball did favor me a little, and I did have some luck."

Opening stand

Gibbs, who shared a 301-run opening stand with Graeme Smith on Friday, batted for almost eight hours, faced 335 balls and hit 24 fours and three sixes.

He was finally out after lunch when he cut part-time spinner Ramnaresh Sarwan to Daren Ganga at backward point.

Sarwan collected his second wicket 10 overs later when Gary Kirsten was caught and bowled for 10 from a full toss.

Neil McKenzie then made 50 before he was caught by Brian Lara off Mervyn Dillon.

Earlier Jacques Rudolph was the first wicket of the day to fall, bowled by fast bowler Fidel Edwards for 37.

Edwards was also involved in the West Indies' wicket, catching Mark Boucher for 13 off medium-pacer Dwayne Smith.

Church wedding

The early finish was good news at least for South African fast bowler Andre Nel, who had just under an hour to get to church on time for his wedding.

Nel was scheduled to marry Deanne Weitz at a venue 15 minutes away from Centurion.

"I don't know if he would have landed any balls on the wicket if he had bowled, he was so nervous," said Kallis.

"He got a beer down his throat very quickly to calm his nerves, and we gave him a good send-off in the dressing room."

Nel is due back for the third day's play on Sunday.
