Pierce will miss Australian Open
PARIS, France -- Former Australian Open champion Mary Pierce has withdrawn from this year's event, the French Tennis Federation has announced.
The 1995 champion hasn't played since helping France win the Fed Cup in November and is short of match fitness.
"Believing her level of physical fitness to be lacking, Mary Pierce has decided to pull out of the Australian Open," said the FTF.
"She should return to competition during the Paris Indoor Open which starts on February 9."
The Australian Open starts on January 19.
