Ferreira falls early in Adelaide
ADELAIDE, Australia -- Wayne Ferreira failed to live up to his top seed billing at the Australian hardcourt championships, crashing out in the first round to Todd Reid.
The South African slumped 6-0 6-1 in windy conditions against the against the 19-year-old Australian wildcard.
In second round matches, Swede Thomas Johansson's comeback from injury continued with a 6-4 6-3 win over French third seed Arnaud Clement and eighth seed Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador lost 6-1 6-3 to France's Michael Llodra.
In delayed first round matches, France's Cyril Saulnier beat fourth-seeded American Robby Ginepri and Britain's Greg Rusedski beat Swiss qualifier Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4 6-2.
"It felt pretty good beating the number one seed in the first round," said Reid.
"It was a pretty convincing victory, I played solid. It was windy out there and I think that troubled him a bit, but I stuck to my guns and came through."
