MEGEVE, France -- World Cup leader Anja Paerson claimed her fourth slalom win of the season in Monday's race at Megeve in the French Alps.
The 22-year-old Swede powered from fifth after her first run to win in a time of one minute, 42.25 seconds, pushing Austrian Marlies Schild into second place.
German pair Martina Ertl and Monika Bergmann-Schmuderer tied for third.
Austria's Nicole Hosp, Paerson's nearest rival, was among five skiers caught out by a treacherous mid-section, finishing 25th.
"It was an unexpected win," said Paerson, who trailed Schild by 0.75 seconds at the end of the first round.
Rhythm and tempo
"I had a bad first run where I couldn't find my rhythm and tempo and I think a lot of skiers had the same problem.
"I had to sit down for half an hour and pull myself together. I told myself I had to take more risks and just go for it."
Paerson, the giant slalom world champion now holds a huge lead in the overall standings with 480 points, 233 points clear of Hosp.
Schild, with no career World Cup wins, admitted the pressure had affected her second run.
"It was a unique situation for me," said the 22-year-old.
"I knew Paerson would attack hard and that put pressure on me. But I'm happy enough with a top three finish."
Kostelic rules out return this season
Reigning World Cup skiing champion Janica Kostelic has confirmed she will miss the rest of the season.
The Croatian has undergone knee surgery four times in 10 months and has recently suffered thyroid problems.
"My doctor has advised me to take a break," Kostelic told German television.
"I won't race again until next season. I am optimistic that I will be back."
