PARIS, France -- Britain's Paula Radcliffe has been officially ratified as world record holder in three distances after athletics' world governing body, the International Association of Athletic Federations, announced that they are to recognize road running and race walking performances.
As a result of the IAAF decision Radcliffe can claim to hold the best 10km, 20km and marathon times.
Poland's Robert Korzeniowski becomes the inaugural world record holder for the men's 50km race walk.
"I am really pleased that the IAAF has decided to recognize performances achieved on the roads as world records," said Radcliffe.
"I think that this is a big step forward and it is important for the sport of athletics, not just track and field, to have world records.
"Road running has long caught public imagination, and many more participate in road events than on the track.
"People can relate to a 10km road race or a marathon, so it is important to get rid of the confusion over world records and world bests."
Korzeniowski added: "All I can say is - finally together! This is a result of IAAF policy, which during the last years has been to help walkers reach equality in the great world of athletics."
