(CNN) -- "Sideways," the story of two men grappling with maturity, led the Golden Globe nominations Monday morning, picking up seven nominations, and Jamie Foxx earned three acting nominations, including best lead actor in a musical or comedy for his performance as Ray Charles in "Ray."

"Sideways" was nominated for best comedy or musical, lead actor in a comedy or musical (Paul Giamatti), supporting actor (Thomas Haden Church), supporting actress (Virginia Madsen), director (Alexander Payne) and screenplay (Payne and Jim Taylor).

"The Aviator," director Martin Scorsese's biography of Howard Hughes, had six nominations, including best drama, best actor in a drama (Leonardo DiCaprio) and best director.

Other best drama nominees are "Closer," "Finding Neverland," "Hotel Rwanda," "Kinsey" and "Million Dollar Baby."

The best comedy or musical nominees, in addition to "Sideways," are "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "The Incredibles," "Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera" and "Ray."

Besides Foxx's nomination for "Ray," he earned a supporting nomination for "Collateral" and a best actor in a TV movie or miniseries nod for "Redemption."

Foxx is the first person to receive three acting nominations in the same year, and the nods came on his 37th birthday.

"What a great way to start the day with three birthday gifts," he told The Associated Press. "I am honored to be mentioned in the same categories with such tremendously talented actors."

Best actor in a comedy or musical nominees are Foxx, Giamatti, Jim Carrey ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"); Kevin Kline ("De-Lovely"); and Kevin Spacey ("Beyond the Sea").

Besides DiCaprio, other best actor in a drama nominees are Javier Bardem ("The Sea Inside"); Don Cheadle ("Hotel Rwanda"); Johnny Depp ("Finding Neverland"); and Liam Neeson ("Kinsey").

Best actress in a drama nominees are Scarlett Johansson ("A Love Song for Bobby Long"); Nicole Kidman ("Birth"); Imelda Staunton ("Vera Drake"); Hilary Swank ("Million Dollar Baby"); and Uma Thurman ("Kill Bill -- Vol. 2"). Swank was also nominated for a TV role, as a suffragist in "Iron Jawed Angels."

Best actress in a comedy or musical nominees are Annette Bening ("Being Julia"); Ashley Judd ("De-Lovely"); Emmy Rossum ("The Phantom of the Opera"); Kate Winslet ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") and Renee Zellweger ("Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason").

Rossum, who's 18, was thrilled with the nomination.

"I got cast right before I was 17 and I'm now 18 and it's just really a thrill for me," Rossum told the AP. "I was thrilled to even get the part. I never thought I would and never even dreamed I would get this far with it."

The Golden Globes, unlike the Oscars, honor films in separate drama and comedy/musical major categories.

Sideways
"Sideways" led all films in nominations, including nods for stars Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church.

Best director nominees are Scorsese, Payne, Clint Eastwood ("Million Dollar Baby"), Marc Forster ("Finding Neverland") and Mike Nichols ("Closer").

Besides Church and Foxx, the nominees for best supporting actor are David Carradine, "Kill Bill Vol. 2"; Morgan Freeman, "Million Dollar Baby"; and Clive Owen, "Closer."

In addition to Madsen, the nominees for best supporting actress are Cate Blanchett, "The Aviator"; Laura Linney, "Kinsey"; Natalie Portman, "Closer"; and Meryl Streep, "The Manchurian Candidate."

Screenwriting nominees are Charlie Kaufman, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"; John Logan, "The Aviator"; David Magee, "Finding Neverland"; Patrick Marber, "Closer"; and Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, "Sideways."

Robin Williams will receive the Cecil B. DeMille award for artistic achievement.

Television nominations

Three of the four "Desperate Housewives" were nominated for best actress in a TV comedy or musical.

The Globes also honor television shows and performances.

"Desperate Housewives" is the show to beat, having been nominated for five awards, including three out of the five slots in the best actress category -- Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and Teri Hatcher. It's also up for best TV comedy, along with "Arrested Development" (which won the Emmy in this category), "Sex and the City," "Will & Grace" and "Entourage."

The nominees for best TV drama are "24," "Deadwood," "Lost," "Nip/Tuck" and "The Sopranos."

The Golden Globes are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a relatively small group -- about 90 members -- whose awards still have an influence on voting for other motion picture awards (though less than in the past, thanks to scheduling changes for the Oscar nominations and ceremony).

The awards will air January 16 on NBC.
