Supreme Court marks passing of former President Reagan

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Supreme Court Monday publicly acknowledged the death of Ronald Reagan, with Chief Justice William Rehnquist saying, "the court notes with sadness the passing" of the former president.
Rehnquist's remarks came at the beginning of a brief public session Monday, when the justices handed out four opinions. Rehnquist said the court would adjourn the session "in respect" for Reagan.
The court said it was not clear which justices would attend Friday's scheduled funeral services in Washington, or other public ceremonies for Reagan.
Reagan nominated three justices to the Supreme Court bench, in addition to elevating Rehnquist to become chief justice in 1986, upon the retirement of Chief Justice Warren Burger.
Sandra Day O'Connor was picked in 1981, becoming the first woman to sit on the Supreme Court. Antonin Scalia was nominated in 1986, and Anthony Kennedy a year later. All four still serve on the court.
