REDWOOD CITY, California (CNN) -- Defense attorney Mark Geragos filed notice late Thursday that he is ready to proceed "immediately" with the murder trial of his client Scott Peterson, who's charged with killing his wife Laci and their unborn son.
Geragos just a week ago joined Stanislaus County prosecutors in submitting a joint proposal to Judge Al Delucchi to start the trial February 17. The two sides will be in court Monday morning to try to set the calendar.
In a brief notice filed by fax with San Mateo Superior Court, Geragos stated, "Please take notice that Mr. Peterson's counsel, Mark J. Geragos, is not currently engaged in trial before any court and is prepared to proceed to trial immediately."
The high-profile defense attorney is currently involved with at least three other cases, including a murder trial in southern California and singer Michael Jackson's defense against charges of committing lewd acts upon a child.
Earlier this week, a judge in Santa Ana, California, questioned Geragos as to whether he was focusing enough attention on an embezzlement case he is defending in that court.
Peterson, 31, is scheduled to stand trial in Redwood City sometime this month. He has maintained his innocence, saying his wife, Laci, intended to take their dog for a walk the morning of December 24, after he left to go fishing at the Berkeley Marina.
The bodies of Laci and the Petersons' unborn son washed ashore along San Francisco Bay last April, two miles from where Peterson said he was fishing on Christmas Eve 2002.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
