Asia mixed on soft U.S. trade

(CNN) -- Japanese stocks are mixed in early trade Friday, with tech issues lower after falls on Wall Street.

The Nikkei 225 average is down 0.16 percent at 10,736.79, after putting on 0.72 percent in Thursday's session.

The broader Topix index is up 0.06 percent to 1060.545.

Other markets in the region are trading in a narrow range. There are modest gains of about 0.1 percent for Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, while Taiwan is virtually unchanged.

But in South Korea, the Kospi is down about half a percent.

On the currency front, the dollar is stronger, trading at 107.19 yen in Tokyo. It is also firmer against the euro at $1.2740. The Australian dollar remains near seven-year highs at 79.12 U.S. cents.

In Tokyo, newly listed Shinsei Bank is giving up some of Thursday's massive 57 percent gain on debut. The stock is trading at 791 yen, off 4.3 percent.

Other big banks are flat or slightly higher. Mizuho is 0.3 percent firmer at 322,000 yen.

Japan's three biggest automakers are again firmer, with gains of 1.6 percent for Nissan, 0.6 percent for Honda and 0.27 percent for Toyota.

But fourth-ranked Mitsubishi Motors is down 1.2 percent after predicting more losses ahead. (Full story)

Tech bellwether Advantest is down 2.6 percent and Tokyo Electron is 1.7 percent lower.

In the consumer electronics field, Sony is up about half a percent to 4550 yen, Canon is about the same at 5260 yen and NEC is 1 percent ahead to 796 yen.

But there are falls for Toshiba, Hitachi, Sanyo and Mitsubishi Electric.

In Seoul, the Kospi is 0.45 percent lower to 877.65. Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom are both in the red, giving back Thursday's gains.

Shinhan is also down, off 1.5 percent. Big exporter Hyundai Motor is 1.4 percent lower to 48,100 won.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX200 is 0.09 percent higher to 3354.0.

Resources leader BHP Billiton is continuing to post gains after Thursday's strong profit result, adding another 2 percent to A$12.43. (Full story)

Telstra is up 0.6 percent to A$4.72. But media heavyweight News Corp. is down 1.2 percent to A$12.11.

Taiwan's Taiex is just 0.07 percent higher to 6686.48, reflecting softness among tech peers in the United States.

Singapore is also virtually flat, with the Straits Times index up 0.04 percent to 1890.77. SingTel is almost 1 percent ahead to S$2.33.

In New Zealand, the Top 50 is 0.17 percent higher to 2438.37. Telecom NZ is unchanged at NZ$5.64, while Carter Holt Harvey is about half a percent higher.

The moves in Asia follow another down day on Wall Street Thursday. The Dow closed just in the red, off 0.07 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 1.47 percent. The index had risen 63 percent from last March. (Full story)
