Dorgan keeps Senate leadership position
North Dakota senator to remain policy committee chairman
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota said Friday that he will remain chairman of the Democratic Policy Committee in the coming congressional session.
Dorgan, in a written statement, said he had accepted an invitation from Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada to remain in the post.
"Our Democratic caucus needs to be united and aggressive in working on the issues that we know will strengthen this country," he said. "I look forward to working with Senator Reid and others in our caucus to achieve these goals."
The Democratic Policy Committee aids the party's Senate members on matters of policy and research. According to its Web site, the committee "serves as a centralized source of information for all Senate Democratic offices and helps promote Democratic policies through hearings, special events, publications, and graphics services."
Dorgan won his third term in the Senate on Tuesday, defeating Republican challenger Mike Liffrig.
Reid, currently the Senate's minority whip, said earlier this week that he has enough support among his colleagues to become the Senate's next Democratic leader in the wake of the defeat of Minority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota.
The next congressional session begins in January.
