WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Jack Quinn, a moderate Republican from New York, surprised his colleagues Monday by announcing his retirement from the House effective at the end of this term.

The move gives Democrats a shot at another swing seat in their uphill quest to take back control of the chamber.

Quinn, 53, becomes the second moderate Republican from New York to announce retirement this month, joining Rep. Amo Houghton, whose retirement also gives Democrats a pickup opportunity.

Quinn, who represents a district in Buffalo where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 2-to-1 margin, cited the time constraints of the job for his decision. He has served six terms in the House.

"My family has made incredible sacrifices for 12 years to allow me to do my job and any success we have enjoyed belongs to them as much as anyone," said Quinn, in a statement released by his office.

One potential Republican candidate for the seat is the congressman's son, Jack Quinn, an assistant district attorney for Erie County
