This CNN Presents Classroom Edition IN THE LINE OF FIRE is an investigation into a disturbing issue: Police officers are being burned alive when their patrol cars burst into flames in high-speed, rear-end collisions. The nation's most popular police car, the Ford Crown Victoria police Interceptor cruiser, has its gas tank behind the rear axle, where safety critics say it's more vulnerable. Police often survive the impact of a crash, only to be trapped and die in the fire. Ford says these are extremely violent, high-speed accidents and it isn't feasible for any vehicle to withstand that type of high-speed, high-energy crash. It has put new shields on sharp parts around the gas tank, and says it is trying to make a safe car even safer. This program goes deep inside this debate with those on the front lines of a life or death issue.
