Overview: Two nearly simultaneous suicide bombings rocked central Tel Aviv early Sunday evening, killing at least 23 people and wounding more than 100 others.
Have students read "Explosions rock Israeli city of Tel Aviv" and answer the following questions:
1. Where in Israel did Sunday's suicide bombings take place? How many people were killed and injured as a result of these bombings? Why didn't many of the injured go to the hospital for help? Who is thought to be responsible for the attacks? How have Palestinian and Israeli leaders responded to the bombings? What retaliatory action did the Israeli military take?
2. Direct students to the Holt, Rinehart and Winston map of Israel (http://go.hrw.com/atlas/norm_htm/israel.htm) to locate the city of Tel Aviv and Gaza. Then ask students to consider what they think the best course of action for the Israelis and Palestinians is at this point. Have students work in groups to review the recent history and status of Israeli-Palestinian relations, including the peace process to date and the events that have interrupted its progress. Share their findings in class discussion. Then have each student use what he/she has seen in the video, combined with the information gathered in research and discussion, to write a newspaper editorial that might appear in either an Israeli or a Palestinian paper. The focus of the editorial should be an opinion, supported with fact, on what course that government should pursue.
