Around the port in 130 days

Story Tools

LONDON, England -- A yachtsman abandoned his round-the-world trip after failing to sail beyond the English Channel in 130 days.

Adrian Cross set out from England to circumnavigate the world in November, but storms and an oil slick prevented him from sailing further the French port of Brest, The Times reported.

"Some people go around the world and not see a storm. We've been like a cork in a washing machine. I probably could have walked the 500 miles to France by now," Cross said.

He spent two months trying to get his 31 foot boat, Gentoo, out of St Malo harbour while being driven back by high winds, only to encounter an oil slick from the sunken cargo ship Prestige.

An experienced yachtsman, Cross has sailed to the Arctic and the Antarctic, The Times said.

He planned to set out again next month.
