CADIZ, Spain (CNN) -- American adventurer Steve Fossett has begun his latest record bid -- the East-West Transatlantic record.

Fossett and his crew of 12 sailed from Puerto Sherry, Spain early on Saturday morning, heading for San Salvador Island, Bahamas, just over 3,884 nautical miles away.

They hope to beat the record of 10 Days, 14 hours, 53 minutes and 44 seconds, set by New Zealander Grant Dalton and Frenchman Bruno Peyron sailing Club Med in June 2000.

They were sailing the 125 ft (38m) maxi-catamaran PlayStation, and averaging 18 knots since their departure, the crew's official web site said on Sunday.

Fossett holds numerous records for sailing and flying, including nine of the 12 fastest World Record passages in sailing as certified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
