Fossett readies for departure

PlayStation
PlayStation: crew has been on standby for a fortnight

CADIZ, Spain (CNN) -- American adventurer Steve Fossett plans to start his next record-breaking sailing attempt on Friday.

Fossett will attempt the East-West Transatlantic record, from Puerto Sherry, Spain to San Salvador Island, Bahamas.

The record stands at 10 Days, 14 hours, 53 minutes and 44 seconds, set by New Zealander Grant Dalton and Frenchman Bruno Peyron sailing Club Med in June 2000.

Fossett's crew have been on standby for a fortnight, but their skipper issued a "code green" call on Thursday for them to prepare for departure by midnight Friday after weather experts forecast suitable conditions.

They will sail the 125 ft (38m) maxi-catamaran PlayStation.

Fossett hopes to reach Gran Canaria "in less than 36 hours," to give the crew "sufficient time to struggle with lighter winds in the last third of the course and still break the record," he said on his official web site.
