Alinghi loses second sailor
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (CNN) -- Alinghi sailor Bernard Labro has broken his collarbone in a traffic accident in Auckland, preventing him from competing in the America's Cup on Saturday. The injury is the second to befall an Alinghi sailor recently, after Christian Karcher withdrew from sailing due to a hip injury. Labro, a bowman, was injured when he jumped from his motor scooter to avoid a collision with a bus on Tuesday afternoon. Labro said he braked hard to avoid the bus, jumped from the scooter and hit the pavement, breaking his collarbone. "A broken clavicle is not a very major injury, but it is disappointing to be injured right before the America's Cup. There is nothing I can do," Labro said. "I will carry on pushing in certain areas where I can. This is my fourth America's Cup, and I hope the next one will be better." The Alinghi team's medic and physiotherapist accompanied Labro to Auckland Hospital. Labro's left arm was immobilised in a sling and doctors said the bone should heal completely in six weeks, with moderate activity possible in three weeks. He will not be onboard SUI-64 for the 31st America's Cup, which begins February 15 against Team New Zealand, the team said, but he will be part of the onshore crew. The 34-year-old Frenchman has been sailing professionally since he was 19. Dutchman Pieter Van Nieuwenhuyzen is the other bowman in the 31-member sailing crew. Karcher fell during training in very heavy weather early in November 2002, landing on a winch pedestal and aggravating a fissure in his hip. He continued sailing but cracked the fissure completely on February 1, making it impossible to sail in this America's Cup campaign.
