Millennium Cup race win for Prada
AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Italian skipper Francesco de Angelis has won the first race of the four-day Millennium Cup superyacht regatta in Auckland. De Angelis, who skippered Louis Vuitton Cup challenger Prada, was at the helm of Ulisse, also owned by Patrizio Bertelli, the head of the Italian fashion house Prada. Fifty superyachts, valued in excess of $500 million, with 21 sailing yachts over 30m (100ft), are competing in the regatta on the Hauraki Gulf as a prelude to the America's Cup Match this weekend. The competitors include top America's Cup sailors, designers and syndicate heads. Peter Harrison, backer of the British America's Cup team, is sailing the oldest yacht in the fleet, the restored classic 31m (101ft) gaff cutter Moonbeam, designed and built in 1914 by William Fife. Largest are two impressive 50m (164ft) ketches, Perseus and Phryne, designed and built by the Italian yard Perini Navi of Viareggio. Looking to repeat her 2000 performance is the 44.7m (146ft) ketch Mari Cha III, owned by Bob Miller, which was the fastest yacht in the inaugural Millennium Cup three years ago. Mari Cha has set records for the West to East transatlantic crossing, and for the run from Sydney to Hobart. The regatta, organised by MAREX, the export arm of the New Zealand marine industry, is a showcase for New Zealand's world-class marine industry as well as a way of raising the country's profile as a cruising destination.
