PlayStation
PlayStation: ready to sail from Spain to the Bahamas

CADIZ, Spain (CNN) -- American adventurer Steve Fossett is preparing to tackle another sailing record -- the Christopher Columbus Route.

The current Columbus record is 10 days, 14 hours, 53 minutes and 44 seconds, set by New Zealander Grant Dalton and Frenchman Bruno Peyron sailing Club Med in June 2000.

Fossett holds eight of the 11 fastest World Record passages in sailing (as certified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council), and twice set the 24-Hour Record of Sailing, among other sporting honours.

Fossett will sail the maxi-catamaran PlayStation east to west across the Atlantic. He already holds the west to east record from New York to the UK, set in October 2001.

The route from Cadiz to Canaries to the Bahamas is officially measured as 3,884.83 nautical miles by the World Sailing Speed Records Council.

Fossett and his international crew of about 12 are waiting for a suitable weather system to begin their crossing.

"After considering an initial forecast for an 1800 GMT departure February 3, we have decided to hold out for a better opportunity," Fossett said on his official Web site.

"The February 3 situation was a little light on wind strength."
