Agnelli sailed in style
TURIN, Italy -- The patriarch of the Fiat car company, Gianni Agnelli, was a keen yachtsman who built several ground-breaking yachts. Agnelli died at his Turin villa last week at the age of 81 and his funeral was held on Sunday. (Full story) As part of his sporting lifestyle, Agnelli owned several classic yachts. In 1987 he built Extra Beat, a 25m (116ft) German Frers design, which was the first of a new generation of 100-foot plus maxi yachts. In 1997 Agnelli went even further, commissioning the sleek all-black Frers designed all-carbon 28m (93ft) maxi Stealth, built at Green Marine in the UK. Agnelli, known for his great sense of style, was personally involved in all the details of his yachts and Stealth was no exception with everything on board, including the mast and sails, finished in black. In 2001 Stealth won line honours in the Rolex Fastnet Race and was first to finish in the recreation of the 1851 America's Cup round the island race during the America's Cup Jubilee regatta. "Agnelli was a man of the old school. He grew up in an environment where politicians and Fiat could intermingle their interests. He grew up in a kind of baron landscape of winner takes all," said his biographer Alan Friedman.
