JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Palestinians, in protest of a deadly Israeli raid on a refugee camp, canceled a Wednesday meeting between top deputies for the Israeli and Palestinian prime ministers, a Palestinian official said.

The scheduled meeting between Palestinian Minister of Negotiations Saeb Erakat and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's chief of staff, Dov Weisglass, was to be the precursor to a proposed meeting between the two leaders.

The Palestinian official said the meeting was canceled in response to Israel's Tuesday raid in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

The Israelis said their military operation was intended to uncover tunnels used for smuggling arms across the border between Egypt and Rafah. The Israeli Defense Force said soldiers uncovered a tunnel for smuggling weapons in a residential building on Rafah's outskirts.

Israelis killed eight Palestinians in a gunfight during the raid, Israeli military officials said. Palestinian medical sources reported 30 people -- including three children ages 5,14 and 16 -- were injured.
