BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A mortar attack has killed one U.S. soldier and wounded two others at Abu Gharib prison near Baghdad, the Coalition Public Information Center said.
The soldier, from the Army's 18th Military Police Brigade, died in the attack, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. (1930 GMT) Sunday.
The death raises to 110 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in hostile action in Iraq since Washington declared an end to major hostilities on May 1.
In August the prison, situated 30 kilometers (20 miles) west of Baghdad, came under attack from mortar fire, killing five Iraqi detainees and wounding and dozens more.
A day later, a cameraman working for the British news agency Reuters was shot dead by American troops while filming outside the prison.
Several hundred Iraqi inmates are being held at the prison despite accusations from human rights groups that conditions in the jail are inhuman.
After a damning report by rights group Amnesty International that accused U.S. forces of violently suppressing a June 13 riot at the prison that left one Iraqi dead, the coalition began refurbishing the prison.
The prison gained notoriety during Saddam Hussein's regime with former inmates reporting that prisoners held there on death row were often tortured prior to execution.
