JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israel Defense Forces early Tuesday shot and killed a Palestinian gunman caught approaching a Jewish settlement in northern Gaza, Israeli military sources said.

According to the sources, an armed Palestinian was discovered crawling 150 meters (yards) inside Israeli territory near the settlement of Dugit.

Palestinian security sources identified the man as a member of Islamic Jihad.

The Palestinian -- armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, hand grenades and ammunition -- was killed in an exchange of fire with IDF troops, the sources said.

The Islamic Jihad is an Islamic fundamentalist movement with four main Palestinian factions. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad calls for the destruction of Israel, with the goal of establishing an Islamic Palestinian state. The U.S. State Department has declared Islamic Jihad a terrorist organization.

Meanwhile, in West Bank raids, Israeli security forces arrested 19 wanted Palestinians -- six in Balata refugee camp, one near Jenin and twelve in Nablus, sources said.
